Club Ride Guidelines

DOCV - Group Riding Etiquette

  • Arrive well before the departure time – we normally have a coffee first.
  • When meeting for a ride, you are expected to have a full tank of juice. If one fills up at a servo, we all fill up. Use the lead rider as a guide. Stops will be planned for bikes with a shorter range (we don’t all have ST’s)
  • Follow the Corner Marking System.  Briefly, the lead rider signals to the following rider to stop and wait for the tail rider wherever he would normally use his blinker. These ‘corner markers’ should be visible to the bikes still coming (so therefore should be before the corner) and should point in the direction to be taken as the other bikes approach.
    • The tail rider (usually in a bright vest and nominated in the morning) will then nod or beep for the ‘corner markers’ to continue. The next intersection, we do it all over again and again and again……….
    • You NEVER leave the corner till the last rider comes through and gives you a nod or a beep. The tail rider NEVER passes anyone unless arranged beforehand.
    • If you have somehow still managed to stuff up (it does happen, no dramas – once!!!) you will eventually come to a corner, hopefully a t - intersection. If no-one is waiting, you should be suspicious. STOP YOUR BIKE AND WAIT. We’d rather not chase you down one of two roads.
    • On a big ride with lots of turn-off’s and when the leader rider pulls over, DO NOT GET OFF AND LIGHT UP A CIGGY, or take off any gear. Be guided by the lead rider - if he stays on the bike, helmet and gloves on, do the same. It usually means that we’ll be continuing shortly.
  • Wherever you are, don’t ride in the middle of the bloody road as it is full of loose stones and they pepper anyone behind you. Cars flick all the shit to the middle of the lane.
  • When passing cars, make plenty of room for the bike following you through. Nothing worse than someone jumping on the brakes and leaving no space - with cars approaching !!
  • Always keep an eye on your mirrors.  If someone catches up to you in the twisties, don't race them on the straight, or accelerate hard when they move to overtake you. Back off and let them past safely. If they had caught up to you, they’re most likely more skilled anyway.
  • For new members on your first ride - the easiest place to start the day is at the back of the pack, regardless of how good a rider you may think you are. You most likely will have no idea of what people are doing or how fast they are capable of going, so this will save you from getting into a sticky situation. If you are comfortably keeping up, you can slowly move through the pack until you find someone who rides that same pace as you, and generally, this will be a good place to stay.
  • Pay attention and learn from what other riders around you are doing – it takes time to build up trust from other riders within the club, but if you start off on the wrong foot it will take a lot longer.
  • Be patient, ride safely and arrive home happy.
