DOCNSW Thunder Rally

On: 30-Oct-2019

This tour was advertised from early April to mid May and has now closed with 12 members.

We are organising another group ride to Nundle to attend DOCNSW’s Thunder Rally #38 this year. The aim is to organise a contingent of respectable size similar to our 2017 effort. The 2019 Rally dates are November 1-3:

In 2017 the Club fielded a group of 11. We travelled up over 5 days, had two nights at the Rally, and returned over 3 days. This year’s proposal is to travel up on a version of the 3 day route (via Tumbarumba, Bathurst and Bylong Valley Way), have our time at Nundle, then spend 6 days continuing north. Waterfall Way, Gwydir Hwy, Bruxner Hwy, Clarence Way, Summerland Way and Lions Road are all on the agenda as we zig-zag our way to Queensland. We then have a highlights package of the Brisbane/ Sunshine Coast hinterland that includes a further 4 crossings of the Great Divide (making 10 in total between Narbethong and Toowoomba).

Available time will be spent north and the return plan is to truck the bikes home and fly from Brisbane. It’s not a radical idea if you “do the math”. Alternatively you do your own thing from Noosa. That is the proposal, Members are encouraged to register interest with Geoff Salmon and we’ll take things from there - gsalmon@bigpond.net.au

Note that Nundle is a Rally. It involves camping with limited facilities for the two nights we stay. It sets the tone for the rest of the trip which is modest – a mix of cabins, pubs and motels where some sharing may be required. It involves consecutive days of demanding riding and we need to stay smiling in all weather. It was a successful trip in 2017 and we are striving to repeat it as an adventure, not a soft tour (except for the bit in the airport lounge)! Accommodation is available for non-campers in Nundle township (10 km from the Rally site) but you will need to book early.

Preliminary details are departure ex Healesville on Wednesday, October 30; return flight Saturday, November 9. The Saturday date is contingent on having sufficient bikes to be attractive for the transporter to accept them on a weekend. Booking flights (early and cheaply) depends in turn on locking in the carrier, as also securing Sunshine Coast accommodation. We are understandably looking for early commitment. Please register interest and we can keep you informed directly and fairly. People will be accepted in order of commitment made. We are staying versatile initially but the offer will close sooner rather than later to obtain a fair outcome for those who commit early. Two Wheel Transport and Bike Logistics are our preferred carriers, depending on final number who opt to fly. A deposit will be sought by the Club if a custom deal or group discount is struck with them.
